What If Your Pet Starts Showing Ignorant or Distant Behavior?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a conversation about something I’ve noticed lately—what do you do when your pet suddenly starts acting distant or shows what feels like “ignorant” behavior?

For context, I have a normally affectionate cat who’s always been responsive to attention, routines, and even voice commands. But recently, she’s been ignoring me, not responding when I call, and avoiding eye contact. At first, I thought she was just in a mood, but it’s been going on for days now.

I know pets, like people, have off days, but this change in behavior feels out of character. I’ve ruled out illness (no physical symptoms, eating and drinking are normal), so I’m wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar. Could it be stress? A change in scent or environment? Or maybe she’s trying to communicate something and I’m missing it?

I’d love to hear from dog owners too. I imagine “ignoring” behavior can happen with dogs as well, especially if routines are off or they’re feeling anxious.

What strategies do you use to re-engage with your pet? Do you give them space? Try new activities or toys? Or is it better to stay consistent and let them come around?

Also—when do you know it’s time to escalate and talk to a vet or behaviorist?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Let’s help each other understand the emotional world of our pets a bit better!
